Dear CPS Colleagues, Families, and Supporters,
After successfully opening elementary schools earlier this year, we are eager to provide our high school students with the same opportunity for in-person learning later this month. While our discussions with the Chicago Teachers Union are ongoing, we remain fully committed to welcoming back all interested high school students on Monday, April 19.
The complexity of high school schedules requires each school to develop a unique reopening plan that aligns to the number of students returning in person and the space available for social distancing. The district has developed a set of scheduling models for schools to choose from that align to our health and safety guidance. If you’re interested in learning more about the models that will be used, please watch our presentation from the March Board Meeting, which outlines the different approaches for reopening. High schools have begun hosting their own community meetings to discuss their scheduling model. If you are a parent or guardian of a high school student, please check in with your school about their reopening plan.
As we’ve said before, the best place for our students to learn is in the classroom, and we are excited to finally be able to provide this option to our high school students. We thank you for your continued partnership and look forward to a strong finish to this school year.

Celebrating National Assistant Principals WeekThis past week, our district recognized the hard work of assistant principals across Chicago for National Assistant Principals Week. Whether they are assisting teachers with planning high-quality instruction, helping to create a positive school culture, or supporting our principals to lead our schools to new heights, our APs are always willing to go the extra mile for our students. One example is Ms. Michelle Soto, an assistant principal who has been part of the Nightingale Elementary community since she was a third-grade student. Being the mom of two Nightingale students herself motivates her to connect her work back to benefitting all students and the surrounding community.

What Our High School Students Have to Say
Across the city, our high school students have a variety of reasons why they are hoping to return to their schools as soon as possible. At Curie High School, freshmen Divine and Lanayah believe that returning to their classrooms will help them develop new skills and strategies for balancing their schoolwork and other responsibilities. They also want in-person access to their counselors, teachers, and other supportive adults. At Austin College and Career Academy, Marshawn, a senior, simply wants to celebrate the last few months of his high school journey in an environment that feels like school to him. He also wants to reconnect with his friends before they graduate.

A Look Inside Our Schools This Week
At Ravenswood Elementary, students had the opportunity to enhance what they are learning in the classroom through a visit from the Mobile Museum of Tolerance. Hear what four eighth-grade students had to say about the lessons they’ll take from the experience into high school and beyond. And our teachers continue to pour their hearts into finishing the school year strong. The kindergarten team at Randolph Elementary in West Englewood has been working hard to keep every day fun and exciting for their students—check out what a typical Wednesday morning looks like in their virtual classroom. And Mr. Charles Gunn, a diverse learner teacher at Smyth Elementary, has balanced leading his own classroom while going above and beyond to meet the technology needs of his families.

Estimada familia de CPS:
Tras haber reabierto con éxito las escuelas primarias a principios de este año, nos emociona ofrecerles a nuestros estudiantes de secundaria la misma oportunidad de asistir a las clases presenciales a finales de este mes. Si bien seguimos nuestras discusiones con el Sindicato de Maestros de Chicago, nos comprometemos a darles la bienvenida a este grupo de estudiantes que estén interesados en volver a las aulas el lunes 19 de abril.
La complejidad de los horarios de secundaria exige que cada escuela elabore un plan de reapertura distinto que concuerde con el número de estudiantes que regresarán a las aulas y el espacio disponible para el distanciamiento social. El distrito ha desarrollado un conjunto de modelos de horario que cumplen con los requisitos de nuestra guía de salud y seguridad. Si le interesa informarse más sobre los mismos, por favor vea nuestra reunión de la Junta de Educación de marzo, que describe los diferentes enfoques que tomaremos. Las escuelas secundarias han empezado a realizar reuniones comunitarias para discutir sobre su modelo de horario. Si usted es un padre o tutor de un estudiante de secundaria, le pedimos que esté atento a un comunicado sobre ello que recibirá de parte de la escuela.
Como hemos dicho antes, el mejor entorno de aprendizaje es el aula de clases, por lo que nos emociona poder finalmente impartir las clases presenciales a nuestros estudiantes de secundaria. Le agradecemos por su continua colaboración y esperamos concluir el año escolar de manera exitosa.

Celebrando la Semana Nacional de los Subdirectores
La semana pasada, nuestro distrito reconoció el arduo trabajo de los subdirectores en todo Chicago durante la Semana Nacional de los Subdirectores. Desde ayudar a los maestros en la planificación de clases hasta crear una cultura escolar positiva y brindarles apoyo a los directores para hacer avanzar aún más las escuelas, nuestros subdirectores siempre están dispuestos a hacer un esfuerzo extra por nuestros estudiantes. Un ejemplo es Michelle Soto, una subdirectora que ha sido parte de la comunidad de Nightingale Elementary desde que era una estudiante de tercer grado. Ahora, el hecho de que también es madre de dos estudiantes de Nightingale la motiva a apoyar a todos los estudiantes y la comunidad circundante por medio de su trabajo.
Lo que nuestros estudiantes de secundaria tienen que decir
En toda la ciudad, nuestros estudiantes de secundaria tienen varias razones por las que esperan volver a sus escuelas tan pronto como sea posible. En la Curie High School, Divine y Lanayah, estudiantes de 9.º grado, creen que el regreso a sus aulas les ayudará a desarrollar nuevas habilidades y estrategias para balancear sus tareas y otras responsabilidades. También quieren reunirse en persona con sus consejeros, maestros y otros adultos de apoyo.
